The Fun Run

After Angel Delgadillo’s grassroots organization, The Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona, succeeded in getting the State of Arizona to bring back Route 66 as a historic highway, they held a dedication celebration. On April 22, 23, and 24th of 1988, the Association invited the public to travel the 156 mile stretch of newly preserved Historic Route 66 between Seligman and Topock, Arizona. (Watch the news coverage of the event on our YouTube channel.)

The “Historic Route 66 Fun Run Car Rally and Show” event was enjoyed so much by everyone that it became an annual event. Now every year over 800 cars come to Seligman to start the weekend of fun. The three day event is held the first weekend of May. Although many people register their beautiful classic and custom cars to travel the designated Arizona Scenic Road, the event is open to all street legal vehicles. Events are held in Seligman on Friday and Saturday morning. Then on Saturday morning the parade of cars leaves Seligman and starts their journey westward along Route 66. The towns along the way; Grand Canyon Caverns, Peach Springs, Hackberry, Valle Vista, and Kingman; welcome and entertain the travelers in their own special way on Saturday. In Kingman, the “Show-N-Shine” lets participants show off their cars. The festivities continue on Sunday as the caravan leaves Kingman to explore the wild west of Cool Springs Station and Oatman. At the end of the drive, the town of Topock-Golden Shores hosts the Awards Ceremony and Farewell Reception.

Although not an official car show, 66 trophies are given to participants for such categories as “Best Plymouth”, “Best Under Construction”, “Best Antique Vehicle”, “Best Paint”, “Classiest Interior”, “Best Motor” and 60 others! The Fun Run is a great way to enjoy the longest stretch of remaining Route 66 left in the country.
